Stationary Gene Laboratory

Do you want to experience gene technology close up? The two practical courses of the Stationary Gene Lab offer the opportunity to gain an authentic insight into current research in the field of molecular biology. The offer is aimed at high school classes from the 10th grade onwards, but is also open to private groups.

«Research for Life» organizes this course in collaboration with the LSLC of the University of Zurich and the ETH Zurich, on whose premises the courses are also held.

For some years, «Research for Life» has offered interested school classes the opportunity for practical experience of gene technology with the Mobile Gene Lab. Since March 2006, has been complemented by the courses of the Stationary Gene Lab, which is held in collaboration with the Life Science Zurich - Learning Center (LSLC) of the University of Zurich and ETH Zurich.

Courses on offer

Gene transfer to bacteria – bacterial transformation

In a practical course lasting about 3–4 hours, a lacZ gene transfer to bacteria (transformation) is carried out and verified by means of a selection experiment (blue/white test). The participants get to know the principles of producing transgenic organisms (use of vectors, resistance genes, selection methods, ligation/restriction) and practise important working methods and basic techniques of everyday molecular biology.

DNA crime scene analysis – genetic fingerprint

In a full-day course (5–6 hours with lunch break) a crime scene DNA analysis is conducted and evaluated by means of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and electrophoresis. The participants get to know both the theory (genetic fingerprint, allele frequencies, electrophoresis and PCR) and the practice of one of the most important methods of molecular biology for the replication of the tiniest quantities of DNA and also its role in research, criminology and industry.

Information and registration

Both English and German are possible.
